Price and how often it is published

My magazine will be priced at £2.20. This is equal to Kerrang! whilst cheaper than NME and Rocksound who are competitors. It means it can compete with its competitors by being at least equal to their price and beating the majority on low cost.
Being at this price makes the magazine available to lower demographic groups who may not be able to afford more expensive music magazines.
The magazine will be published weekly as is the case with most competitors. It allows a lot of what is happening in the music world to be published as things can be missed if so much happens that a magazine cannot fit it in because it isn’t published weekly.

Psychographics and demographics of my target audience

My target audience will primarily be those interested in rock music or any of the bands featuring in the magazine.
The demographics of my target audience will mean that any person can buy it as long as they earn a little money. It will be at the lower end of magazine cost being around £2-2.50 so even an unskilled or part time worker can find a way to afford it. There will also be chances to lower the price through subscription deals encouraging this demographic group to buy.
The Psychographics of my target audience will be of those who are passionate about rock music above other types of music and stick to that even if people judge them for it. The magazine will put rock music in as good a light as possible to keep them into it no matter what other people may think about them.

LIIAR response of Rocksound

Language
The masthead of Rocksound is at the top in fairly big bold letters. It is in orange which is the colour that stands out most on the cover. The masthead identifies the genre of music featured in the magazine as being rock with the masthead being ‘rocksound’.
The contents page has no masthead though it doesn’t really require one as it is clear what the page is. The same goes with the double page spread which has a title rather than a masthead.
The main image on the cover is of a band. The picture is a long shot and all the members of the band are looking at the audience. It looks good as people may recognise a full band that they know quicker than just the lead singer often used as a main image.
Many images are on the contents page and non-really stand out more than others. A reader needs to look over them individually to see what they want to look at.
On the double page spread the main image is placed behind the title and features the band Evanescence with the lead singer in the centre looking at the audience.  It shows the band newly reformed and makes an audience want to read the story on how this happened and maybe who the new members are if they are familiar with them.
The house colours on the front are orange, white and grey.  The orange is used on the writing to make it stand out whilst the white and grey is used on the background so it doesn’t draw attention away from the rest of the colour but at the same time isn’t a single bland colour.
The content uses different shades of the house colours used on the contents page. It still sticks to the majority of the page as grey and white however some boxes are different shades of orange which could be to draw attention to a bigger story.
The double page spread does the same except the orange is a subtle pattern placed in the background behind the writing. This is likely because we’re meant to concentrate on the stories and the pictures. The colour was merely added so the page wasn’t so bland.
The price and barcode of the magazine are in the bottom corner because it isn’t particularly important unless somebody wishes to buy the magazine.  By being placed here it doesn’t cover any other features of the magazine cover.
At the bottom of the contents is an orange bar which gives us teasers as to what is inside the magazine which interests people who like one of the bands listed and may get one off customers who wouldn’t usually buy the magazine.
The main story is in the centre and is in the biggest writing on the cover. It is attention grabbing and gets people’s attention even if they just glance at the magazine.
The magazine has a free cd every issue which may tempt people to get it as it feels like you are getting more for your money. It may also feature music by a band they like, for example a new song they have released, tempting them further.
Audience
The psychographics of the target audience of the magazine are those who like rock music or anyone who like any of the featured bands. This magazine is slightly more expensive than some music magazines so is aimed at a audience maybe higher up in the demographics chart who can afford a weekly, £3.99 magazine.
Institution
The magazine is a national magazine published and sold in the UK and focuses on selling to the UK market whilst still including international bands.
Ideology
The bands in the magazine are photographed professionally as they would look at their best. It gives us a positive impression of the band and helps us recognise them straight away as this appearance might be different from how they look from day to day.
Representation
The bands in Rocksound are represented as successful or shown as they come back into music fresh and ready for more. It shows the successful side of the music industry and promotes new music made by the bands through a free cd.

NME LIIAR Review

Language
The masthead of NME is in large block letters which are simple in design.  Though it isn’t the biggest text on the page it is still large enough to be eye-catching to people who see the magazine.
The masthead of the contents page is also in large text though is slightly more ‘formal’ than the cover. The masthead reads ‘Inside this Week’ which is a better contents masthead than simply using ‘contents’ which some magazines may use.
No masthead is present on the double page spread because it is a story that doesn’t appear every week in the magazine so you can’t really associate a recurring masthead with it. Though this is the case the title may be treated as such being the biggest writing on the page and announcing what the page is.
The main image of the cover is the majority of the page. It is in black and white which though isn’t a very colourful approach makes the magazine different from competitors may look and might just be for this issue grabbing long time readers attention by making them ask why the cover is different this issue. The main image is taken as a medium close up, showing the head and shoulders. It doesn’t follow the conventional main image which would make eye contact with viewers but this way is still effective as it adds a sense of mystery to the cover which could be relevant to a story.
Many images are present on the contents page. The main one would be the central image which seems to stand out from the others. The subject of the image looks at the audience directly unlike most of the others so our eyes are drawn to this image first.
The house colours of the cover of NME are black, white and orange. The orange stands out strongly on the black and white background. It makes all the writing in orange easy to read and stand out more.  The black and white is because the image on this particular cover is a black and white image so using any other colours would be overpowering and draw attention away from the image. They fit the best.
Other than the images themselves on the contents page the two colours are black and white.  This follows the house colours and doesn’t distract our attention from the images.
The house colours on the double page spread are chosen to fit with the story. To do this they keep the white background and use black for the text however they add green. This fits because the story is the ‘Roots of Veronic Falls’ so a colour was chosen which would associate this but wouldn’t heavily deviate from the house colours of the magazines.
The price and barcode of the magazine are in the bottom corner because it isn’t particularly important unless somebody wishes to buy the magazine.  By being placed here it doesn’t cover any other features of the magazine cover.
Teasers of what is in the magazine are on the cover and sort of on the contents. On the cover they’re spread out so they circle the main image. The title of each one is in orange so they’re easy to see and they allow people to see what is in the magazine at a glance.
The teasers in the contents are under some of the images. They act as anchorage for these images as well and tell us what the images are about and where in the magazine we can find the story.
The main story is in bigger writing than the masthead and is one of the first things we see. It draws our attention to the magazine, especially to those who are fans of what the story is about.
Institution
NME is a national magazine published in the UK. It focuses on the UK market though publishes stories about both national and international bands. It likely has an established market in the UK so focuses on this market.
Ideology
NME shows artists of popular music at both their best and worst publishing the most interesting stories about them. It specifically chooses interesting stories which will attract the most readers and may over exaggerate on stories because it makes it more interesting to read.
Audience
NME has a large target audience because it features popular music which can cover many genres. It also means that people who have heard well known songs may recognise items on the cover and may pick up the issue because of it.
Representation
Artists in NME are represented as they would look on stage. It gives a reader instant recognition of who they are. It shows them as successful which they are to be in a popular music magazine and will make us feel bad if a successful artist is having a bad time in their life because we know how talented they look.

Kerrang! Cover LIIAR Response

The masthead on the front of the magazine is a clever use of onomatopoeia which is that of the sound of a power chord played on an electric guitar. It is an eye-catching Masthead relevant to the genre of music the magazine is about. The masthead is generally in white on a black background or black with a white background. It is always clear to read because these colours go well together either way round.

The main image is a medium close up which shows the head and shoulders of someone from a big story inside the magazine. The person in the picture makes eye contact with the audience so they can associate themselves with the person and magazine more. If the picture wasn’t like this it wouldn’t stand out as much so people wouldn’t notice it.

The house colours of the cover are black, white and red. The black and white colours work well together as you can read any writing when they’re put together. White is also used for the background so all attention is drawn to over features of the cover rather than the background. The red on the front is used to add some strong, eye-catching colours. It catches your eye more than the black and white and because of this more important or exciting information is put onto red backgrounds so we see it first. Only three main colours are used so that the cover isn’t overwhelming and difficult to read.

Thumbnail articles used on the front this issue of Kerrang is played to the right of the main image and below it. One of them is a teaser story within the magazine which says “What’s next for Paramore” underneath. Paramore are the band the thumbnail image depicts and it is used to make readers interested in them want to buy the magazine to see what the story has to say. The other thumbnail images are advertising free posters and persuade people to buy the magazine because it may have within it a poster of a band they like.

The price and barcode of the magazine are in the bottom corner because it isn’t particularly important unless somebody wishes to buy the magazine. By being placed here it doesn’t cover any other features of the magazine cover.

Anchorage is used under all the images (main and thumbnails) on this cover of Kerrang. It draws attention to each image by telling you something about it. For example under the main image it says: Slipknot success survival…Corey Taylor answers your questions. The anchorage gives us insight into what the picture is about and makes us interested in it and want to read more. Anchorage on this cover is written in both red and white to draw attention to it.

Along the bottom of the cover it lists bands featuring in the magazine that don’t have a big enough story to be shown on the cover. The band is still put in red so a reader’s eye is drawn to it and can instantly see if any bands they like are in the magazine.

The main Article is in the centre of the magazine and is as big and bold as the masthead. It is anchorage for the main image as it tells you what it is about. The writing is in different colours though the biggest part of it is in White because it is easiest to read.

Institution

Kerrang is an internationally produced magazine as it is sold both in the UK and Australia. It is printed in the UK so probably focuses on the UK market. This could either be because the company cannot yet afford to expand to other countries or they wish to focus on expanding in the UK.

Ideology

The magazine shows that rock bands are always progressing and that they need to overcome problems to achieve success. It will tend to show rock bands at their best to draw an audience to them and increase the bands fan base and the magazines buyers.

Audience

Kerrang’s target audience is for those who like specifically rock music or possibly for those who like some rock bands who may buy Kerrang should it feature them. We know this because of the onomatopoeia in the title (an electric guitar being an instrument rock bands use) and through all of the bands on the cover being rock bands.

Representation

The bands on the cover are represented in two ways on Kerrang. The main image of Corey Taylor who is the lead singer of slipknot, a band that wears masks whilst playing, is shown as a kinder looking more human person. The thumbnail of Hayley Williams, lead singer of Paramore, shows that bands come across problems by the expression on her face and the writing underneath. These two pictures show that bands are people like us behind all their fame.

Bands are also shown as they would be seen performing as is seen in the My chemical Romance poster thumbnails. They are more shown like this because they’re posters and this is what an audience wants from a poster.

The difference between the two representations of bands is that they are either shown accurately as how the people actually are or stereotypically as you would imagine a rock band to look.

Genre of Music

The genre of my magazine will be rock (including punk rock and alternative). This is because I like this type of music and know more about it than any other genre so it makes sense to choose it. It also means I know of some existing bands I can include as well as the one I create. The bands I intend to feature are: Bon Jovi, Good Charlotte, Bowling for Soup and Muse though I may leave some out depending on how much space I have. I will also include the band I will create who will be of a similar genre to the above.

Liar analysis

Language
The masthead of the magazine should be eye-catching and in a large font. It shouldn’t be more than five or six letters long or it won’t fit on the cover. Also in the case of a music magazine it should be relevant to the genre of music that the magazine covers.
The main image will be of a member of a band featuring heavily in the magazine.  It will be a head and shoulders shot of them and will be looking directly at the audience. Doing this creates a clear picture and makes it easy to tell whether a potential buyer will be interested in the magazine.
The magazine will have 3 house colours that shall be chosen out of colours that go well together. I will also consider colours that are associated with the genre of music in the magazine and colours that are in fashion around this time.
Either at the bottom of the cover or down the side I will include thumbnail pictures.  These will be of stories within the magazine. Alongside these thumbnails will be anchorage in the form of the titles of stories associated with them.
The main article will be an attention grabbing story relating to the main image. It will either be beside them or over their chest so we know it is meant to go along with the main image.  I will likely choose a story like the band is newly formed or is getting back together as these stories attract attention.
The barcode will be at the bottom right of the magazine and it will cost around £2.00. This is an average price for music magazines and even slightly less in some cases. I can justify this price because music magazines are often produced nationally so printing can be expensive.
Institution
The magazine will be published by a publisher who deals with this genre of music and is willing to print it nationally. This allows for a maximum amount of customers and the ability to compete with other magazines that cover the same genre.
Ideology
The magazine will show the best elements of the genre of music I choose. It will show bands through their highs and lows and show how good it makes their fans feel to hear them play. It will also represent bands as normal people behind the music so that fans can connect with them on a more personal level.
Audience
The target audience will depend on the genre. It will include those who like the genre and anyone who has a wide taste in music or wants to get into a new genre of music.
Representation
The magazine will show bands as people who love what they do and who love their fans. They will be shown as skilled and professional in music and passionate about playing.

Music Magazine Brief

Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style).

Pictures

Unfortunately Prezzi and my computer don't want to cooperate with each other.
Here are the pictures I have.

This picture came out blurred and I didn't realise the flash had been on when I took it until the next picture.
I will likely not use this picture.

This picture could be used in my magazine to show off the art produced by students in the college
or to let people know about art drop in sessions. It is better quality than the first picture so I would use this one instead of the first.

This poster came out well. It does need cropping a little bit in Photoshop so there's an even amount of black
around each side of it to make the picture look neater. Rather than use another drop in session story I could
use this poster as one that seeks help from students in making displays for around the college.

This picture shows Media students hard at work. It came out well and doesn't look staged so will fit into
the magazine maybe as a story for Media drop in sessions.

I will use this picture as my medium close up on the front cover. It came out fairly well and gives the students
of Wyke a positive look.

This picture could be used to let people know about new vending machines in college. It game out well though I may need to crop it in Photoshop and then zoom in on one of the vending machines, likely the one on the left.

Design similar to market research

Market research evaluations

Student Life

The masthead of ‘student life’ on the magazine is big and bold so your eyes are drawn to it when you first see the magazine. The main image underneath the masthead isn’t very interesting. It doesn’t focus on one particular person so we aren’t really drawn to it and our eyes sort of overlook it. It also gives us a bleak first impression of the college as it isn’t a very cheerful picture. The story on the picture is given a very brief and un-interesting heading. It also blends in a little with the photograph making it a little difficult to read. The colour scheme on the magazine uses two house colours, black and white. They work well together though are a little dull and a third colour may have made the cover more interesting. The magazine requires no price or barcode because it is free. The line ‘Media students in Berlin’ is used to tell us about the picture but it doesn’t give us much information about it like why they’re where in Berlin and what they were doing.
The magazine is produced by the east riding college to promote itself.
The cover shows the college as one that does interesting things like travel however; it doesn’t give us a positive impression due to the people on it facing the other direction. It doesn’t make them seem very friendly.
The magazine is aimed at students who attend the college and wish to find out what is happening in the college. It is also aimed at students looking for a college and trying to tempt them to come to this one by showing them what they could do if they did.
The cover doesn’t really represent students accurately. It shows them as kind of depressed and anti-social. This is because they are all wearing hoodies whilst facing away from the camera. The picture is also take as a long shot so we don’t have a close up on any of them and can’t identify what students who go to east riding college are like.

The contents page adds a third house colour to the previous black and white. The colour added is a bright green which does stand out. The contents page gives us vague teasers as to what is inside the magazine through pictures around the side. This is good however it is difficult which image goes with which story on the contents table. The stories aren’t really set out in an interesting way, rather just a list of stories in black writing one after the other. It isn’t obvious which picture goes with which text, in some cases it looks like there is no text to go with the picture.
To improve the contents page could of listed bigger stories more prominently in a separate section and maybe had text relevant to the pictures underneath them to act as anchorage.
Grimsby College
The masthead on the Grimsby college magazine is large and in an interesting, eye-catching font. It is also easy to read. The main image of the magazine cover is small in the corner though it is a close up shot which helps us see the person in it better. They’re also other images on the cover that are large and easy to see but these aren’t to do with any story. The house colours on the cover of the magazine are blue, white and grey. These colours work well together however some of the blue text is difficult to read when put on a grey background though it is only done to remain within the house colours. On the cover there is no visible barcode or price which leads us to the assumption that the magazine is a free one. The teaser stories are well placed at the bottom near pictures they associate with however they are slightly difficult to read due to the colours used.
The magazine is clearly produced by the Grimsby College to let students know what is happening in college. It does this by reporting stories and events which are happening in the college and these things are what the students need to know.
The picture at the bottom right of the magazine doesn’t really show students as happy as the college as the student’s expression looks unhappy which may give the cover a negative vibe.
The contents page of the magazine is a lot more colourful adding several new colours like green, pink, black and orange. This does make it slightly difficult to read but the contents page is more eye-catching because of it. The pictures alongside the contents are relevant to what is listed and it is easy to associate stories with the pictures that are about them.
The main topic in the contents which are the ‘School Leaver Courses’ is in the darkest colours on the page. It makes it stand out less than the rest as our eyes are drawn to the brightest colours first.  To be more effective the contents table could be listed more interestingly and the leaver courses section could be made more prominent.

First basic mock up

Magazine cost

The magazine I am making will be published once every fortnight. This is because college students may not be able to afford a magazine every week but if it was monthly magazine important information in the middle of the month may not be heard of until next month’s issue. The magazine will cost around £1.50. This is a price that an average college student can afford once a fortnight and, due to advertisements inside the magazine bringing in extra income, the magazine can afford to be sold at a cheap price like this.

Demographics and Psychographics of Target Audience

The people the magazine is aimed at will likely be non-working or part time working students attending college. They won’t earn much money so will be looking for a magazine of a fairly low price or is free.  The audience will be in the lowest demographic group.
The readers will we people attending college so will cover a large psychographic variable as students attending a college have a variety of different personalities and opinions. It isn’t really possible to target one type though it psychographic variables do not seem as important when making a magazine to inform about current events in college.

Choice of College

I am choosing Wyke sixth form as the basis of my magazine. I am choosing this college because it is the one I attend so I know a little about it and how to represent it. It will also mean I have inspiration for stories on the front that are easier to think of. The college itself is a good college in which everyone seems happy and works hard. This will provide positive stories for the magazine.

Liar Evaluation of Brief

L
·         Masthead-Short, memorable and has to be the first thing you see when you look at the magazine.
·         Main image- Be large and eye-catching. A medium close up of the person in the image. Have short insights of what is inside the magazine which are maybe clever and witty. Use attention grabbing stories that immediately grab interest.
·         Colour-Have a bright colour scheme using around two to three house colours that go well with each other and still enable you to read the text easily.
·          Price and Barcode-Have bar code including price on it. The magazine isn’t free. Advertising inside to reduce the cost of magazine.
·         Anchorage-Use captions underneath pictures that give us more information on them.
·         Main Article- Explain the main image. Draw more attention to it.

I
The magazine will be produced for both the students and parents of the college by the college itself. It will allow them to read up on events happening in the college that may concern them.
I
The ideology on the front will show the college as a smart in which students are happy whilst they receive the education they signed up for.
A
The magazine will be aimed at students who are looking at which college they wish to go to. It will provide them information and help them make their choice. It will also give current students at the college information on upcoming events.

R
The student on the front will be represented positively and also accurately. This will give someone reading the magazine a better first impression of the college.

The Brief

Preliminary Exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a Photoshop of a student in a medium close-up plus some appropriately laid out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate your grasp of DTP.
