My music magazine shows the rock genre because the band is young, look relaxed are casually dressed. New rock bands tend to look young and don’t put a huge amount of effort into appearance so casual clothing will show a more realistic rock band. The fact that the band looks relaxed could show that they aren’t bothered with their own problems and that they care about the music so are where they want to be.
When we compare the images to other rock bands in different magazines they share the similarity that they wear casual clothes and that they haven’t put more effort into their appearance than they need to. A generic feature that seems to appear in rock magazines is that the bands do look like regular people who are just in a band though sometimes they may have more extreme appearances (face paint, blood ect.) but since the band is new it makes more sense to show them like this so fans are introduced to the people rather than the band.
The social class represented in my magazine would be one of the lower ones though the highest one could be around C. The magazine is cheap and the bands shown in the magazine have likely come from similar backgrounds to these readers. It means that readers can associate with the bands better and are more likely to like a band if they have had similar lifestyles. The story in the double page spread of my magazine supports this as it is about a band from a regular background who become successful. Things like this may also give the lower social class’s hope that they can be successful to and reading things like this may make them want to buy the magazine more.
Target audience of my product and how it compares to my original target audience
My original target audience was a wide range of people that liked rock music. Because of the price almost anyone with at least some source of income can purchase the magazine and anyone who is into rock music and has a larger source of income will definitely be able to. The magazine was also aimed at people who’re passionate about rock music so though it is a cheap magazine anyone who is interested in rock music may still purchase so it is aimed at anyone.
My target audience hasn’t really changed. The price of the finished magazine is in the original planned price parameters and it is heavily focused on rock bands for a die hard rock fans needs. One slight difference is that I have focused more on the lower demographic audience as the cover story is of a relatively lower class band rising to success which would appeal more to the lower demographics. This being said big bands are also mentioned in the magazine so higher demographic classes may still pick the magazine up because of them.
I focused more on the lower demographics because rock music is associated more with this class more. Higher demographics may not buy the magazine because they don’t want to be associated with the genre of music in the magazine so it seemed to make more sense to focus on the lower demographic audience.
The psychographic groups of my magazine would be both inner-directed and outer directed. This could also include and integrated psychographic which is a mix of both. The outer directed audience who wished to belong could get into the magazine because of more mainstream rock bands that are widely popular. My magazine would also cover smaller more uniquely sounding bands which would get the interest of a more inner directed audience who maybe like something different to everyone else. An integrated audience may read because though they like mainstream rock they could also have other less mainstream tastes.
Distribution
I would look into IPC media to publish my magazine. This is because my magazine is very similar to Kerrang whose publisher is Baur media. My magazine would give IPC the means to compete with Kerrang. Also IPC is a UK company and my magazine would be distributed in the UK at least when it was first made. This is why I haven’t chosen Conde Nast as a retailer as they’re an American so it doesn’t make sense to go after an American publisher for a British magazine.
How I have attracted my audience
I drew my demographic audience in by creating a cheap rock magazine which most of the lowest demographics should be able to afford if they really want the magazine. I also offer a subscription which saves money on the magazine making it more affordable for them. The cheap price doesn’t stop the higher demographic classes purchasing my magazine but it is more focused on lower demographics.
To attract the integrated outer/inner directed psychographic groups my magazine I have used both widely known bands and less well known more unique bands that aren’t so mainstream. I feel by targeting an integrated audience rather than just either and outer or inner directed psychographic group the magazine will be more popular.

Learnt technologies in making of magazine
In the process of making my magazine I used the quick selection tool most at the beginning. I used it to quickly get rid of the background in my pictures. This allowed me to do it cleanly and once it was done once I could use the picture on all of my drafts without having to remove more than one background per picture with quick select.
I used the blur tool to make my images fit onto my magazine better. It made it look more like it was part of the magazine rather than just placed on top of it. This was done by blurring the edges of images and obscuring the cleanly cut edge left by the quick select tool which would have made it look like it had just been stuck on top.
After my drafts I altered the font of my magazine. Originally it was basic and was the same everywhere on my magazine. As I researched magazines and got feedback I changed it to be more interesting. I did this using the contour tool on the largest and/or most prominent text. I changed text to a more standard look for information in the contents and writing on my double page. This made things look more professional and less overpowering. I used the wide latin font for my biggest writing which had a sharp style and was more eye-catching. I used this text consistently for big titles so that the magazine wasn’t messy with constantly changing font.
I used the spot fix to get rid of most of the spots on the main image face but I didn’t feel it was necessary to use it extensively because rock magazines don’t tend to make a big deal on the bands they feature appearances. I didn’t use Gaussian blur for similar reasons. Another reason it wasn’t used is because I am aiming my magazine at regular people so making the subjects in the images look fake by editing their appearance to much may put off customers.
The images didn’t require the use of red eye because there was no red eye in the image.
On the cover one of the layers is slightly transparent. This gives the cover a varied appearance and allows the cover line to be easily read whilst at the same time not completely covering the part of the main image it is on top of as you can still see it through the layer.
I used the rotation tools to make the positioning of text and the boxes they are in more interesting. The rotated parts are at the same angle as each other for consistency. The rotation makes the cover more eye-catching and interesting than if the text was just in a more column like structure whilst keeping what is on the cover readable. I used the change scale tool to make bigger stories stand out more and fill as much white space as I could. It also allows a reader to distinguish between the title of a story and the description as they are different in size and boldness.
